Training Details

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to load, haul and distribute water using a water vehicle, including dust suppression and moisture control operations.

Assessment is competency-based and combines theory with practical demonstration.

Learning Outcomes

  • Plan and prepare for water vehicle operations, including hazard identification and interpreting emergency procedures
  • Carry out pre-start and operational checks, and manage engine power and gear selection to distribute water safely
  • Load the vehicle within its carrying capacity and discharge or distribute water to suit site and task conditions
  • Park up, shut down and secure the vehicle, and carry out housekeeping on completion

On successful completion you receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for RIIMPO326E Conduct water vehicle operations.

 

Performance Evidence

You must demonstrate water vehicle operations that safely and effectively follow workplace procedures on at least two occasions, including:

  • Conducting pre-start checks and shutdown procedures, and driving and operating the vehicle to suit site conditions
  • Loading, hauling, discharging and distributing water, including discharging water evenly on at least two material types to meet moisture content requirements
  • Distributing water into two separate storage facilities or receptacles, and completing dust suppression operations
  • Locating and applying relevant documentation, policies and procedures, and wearing required PPE
  • Applying safe work practices, problem solving and troubleshooting, and applying water distribution techniques
  • Using audible and other communication signals essential to safe completion of the work

 

Knowledge Evidence

You must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Key policies and procedures, legislation and requirements for water cart operations, including emergencies, site isolation and traffic management plans
  • Specifications and characteristics of rigid, articulated and semi-water vehicles, and their technical capabilities and limitations
  • Calculating safe working loads, and water distribution systems, pumps and pumping system operations
  • Causes and effects of surge and sway in bulk fluid loads
  • Dust suppression and practical field tests for moisture content
