Conduct Roller Operations

Rollers compact road base, asphalt and other materials to the pattern and density a job requires, and this ticket confirms you can operate one safely. RIIMPO317F Conduct Roller Operations builds the skills to plan the work, operate the roller, compact and finish materials, and relocate and secure it on completion.

Training Details

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to operate a roller to compact material on civil construction sites, including preparing for operations, driving and adjusting the roller, and relocating it between work areas. This unit alone does not provide sufficient skill to independently load and unload equipment; RIIHAN308F Load and unload plant or equivalent is also required for that task.

Assessment is competency-based and combines theory with practical demonstration.

The unit covers the core stages of roller operation:

  • Plan and prepare roller operations
  • Operate the roller to complete work activity
  • Prepare to relocate the roller
  • Conduct housekeeping activities

Learning Outcomes

  • Plan and prepare roller operations, including hazard identification, signage and selecting the right equipment
  • Carry out pre-start and operational checks, and drive and operate the roller using techniques suited to site conditions
  • Engage the compacting device, adjust accessories, and manage contaminants safely
  • Prepare the roller for relocation and assist loading and unloading from a float or trailer
  • Conduct housekeeping activities on completion

On successful completion you receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for RIIMPO317F Conduct roller operations.

Performance Evidence

You must demonstrate roller operations that safely and effectively follow workplace procedures on at least two occasions, using two different material types, including:

  • Conducting pre-start checks and shutdown procedures, and driving and operating the roller to suit site conditions
  • Compacting materials to pattern and density, and sealing and finishing
  • Adjusting at least two accessories, such as interchangeable drums, spray bars, scraper bars, brooms or blades
  • Assisting with loading and unloading the roller from a float or trailer, and parking and securing equipment
  • Locating and applying relevant documentation, policies and procedures, and wearing required PPE
  • Applying safe work practices, problem solving and troubleshooting when operating equipment
  • Using hand, audible and other communication signals essential to safe completion of the work

Knowledge Evidence

You must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Key policies and procedures, legislation and requirements for roller operations, including isolation, emergencies, traffic control and machine guidance systems
  • Operational, maintenance and basic diagnostics, and chain of responsibility for loading and unloading equipment
  • Equipment processes, technical capability and limitations, and ground and material conditions
  • Basic principles of material technology and compaction, and civil construction activity sequences for road construction, earthworks and drainage
