Work Safely at Heights

A fall from height is one of the most common causes of serious injury on WA worksites. RIIWHS204E Work Safely at Heights builds the skills to identify fall hazards, select and fit the right fall protection and PPE, and access, work in and clean up a height work area safely. You’ll learn to inspect equipment, install and check safety systems, and monitor and adjust controls as the work continues.

Training Details

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work safely at heights in the resources and infrastructure industries. It applies to those working in operational roles who generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures, and who take responsibility for the quality of their work outcomes.

Assessment is competency-based and combines theory with practical demonstration.

The unit covers the core stages of working safely at heights:

  • identifying work requirements
  • identifying work procedures and instructions
  • accessing and installing equipment
  • performing work at height
  • cleaning up the work area

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify work requirements: interpreting work and site requirements, assessing hazards and risks, and selecting the right plant, tools, PPE and emergency procedures
  • Identify work procedures and instructions: selecting materials and equipment, and inspecting and installing fall and perimeter protection
  • Access and install equipment: fitting and adjusting anchor and fall protection, and accessing the work area safely
  • Perform work at heights: keeping fall equipment adjusted, handling materials safely, and monitoring and reassessing risk controls
  • Clean up work area: dismantling and removing the safety system, clearing the site, and maintaining plant and equipment

On successful completion you receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for RIIWHS204E Work Safely at Heights.

 

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • work safely at heights on at least two occasions, including: accessing, interpreting and applying technical and safety information; assessing hazards and risks and implementing control methods; selecting, wearing and caring for personal protective equipment; identifying required safety systems including fall protection and associated equipment; checking the correct fitting, adjusting and anchoring of fall protection and associated equipment; and performing work safely at heights
  • locating and applying relevant documentation, policies and procedures and confirming that the work activity is compliant
  • implementing the requirements, procedures and techniques for working safely at heights
  • working effectively with others to work safely at heights in a way that meets all required outcomes
  • communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions and coordination requirements before and during work activities

 

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • key legislation required to work safely at heights
  • key policies, procedures and documentation required to work safely at heights, including statutory and regulatory authority requirements
  • principles and techniques for working safely at heights, including heights safety systems and safe work methods
  • principles and techniques for identifying the names and functions of equipment, components and materials
  • principles and techniques for complying with equipment manufacturer instructions and specifications
  • safe shifting and handling of tools and materials
  • principles and techniques for identifying relevant hazards and emergencies
  • techniques for coordinating and communicating job activities with others
