This unit covers the skills and knowledge to conduct telescopic materials handler operations on site, including selecting attachments, lifting and placing materials, and relocating the machine between work areas.

Assessment is competency-based and combines theory with practical demonstration.

Learning Outcomes

  • Plan and prepare for telescopic materials handler operations, including hazard identification and selecting the right equipment and attachments
  • Carry out pre-start and operational checks, and operate the machine using techniques suited to site conditions
  • Attach and secure lifting gear, communicate with a dogman, and shift loads safely
  • Select, fit, test and remove attachments within their design limits
  • Relocate the machine safely between worksites and carry out housekeeping on completion

Performance Evidence

You must demonstrate telescopic materials handler operations that safely and effectively follow workplace procedures on at least two occasions, including:

  • Performing pre-start, start-up and shutdown procedures, and checking controls, brakes and attachments for serviceability
  • Operating the machine and attaching and securing appropriate lifting gear
  • Shifting the load, and selecting, fitting, testing, using and removing certified attachments
  • Transporting the machine and equipment between work sites, and parking and securing equipment
  • Locating and applying required documentation, policies and procedures, and wearing required PPE
  • Applying safe work practices, identifying and reporting hazards, and assessing risks
  • Using hand, audible and other communication signals essential to safe completion of the work

 

Knowledge Evidence

You must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Key policies and procedures, legislation and requirements for telescopic materials handler operations, including isolation and traffic control, safety data sheets, and job safety analyses
  • Maintenance and basic diagnostics, recyclable materials and housekeeping requirements
  • Telescopic materials handler types, characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations
  • Calculating safe working loads and methods of changing machine attachments
  • Safe operating techniques in varying terrain
