Conduct Articulated Haul Truck Operations

Articulated haul trucks load, haul and dump materials across civil, mining and quarry sites, and this ticket confirms you can operate one safely. RIIMPO337E Conduct Articulated Haul Truck Operations builds the skills to plan the work, operate the truck, load and dump materials, and park up and secure it on completion.

Training Details

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to operate, load, haul and dump materials using an articulated haul truck. It applies to both front and rear dumping trucks.

Assessment is competency-based and combines theory with practical demonstration.

The unit covers the core stages of articulated haul truck operation:

  • Plan and prepare for operations
  • Operate the articulated haul truck
  • Load, haul and dump materials
  • Conduct housekeeping activities

Learning Outcomes

  • Plan and prepare for articulated haul truck operations, including hazard identification and interpreting geological and survey data
  • Carry out pre-start and operational checks, and drive and operate the truck using techniques suited to site conditions
  • Position the truck for loading under shovels, wheel loaders, excavators, bins or conveyor belts, and haul materials to designated locations
  • Position the truck for dumping, unload materials with limited spillage, and shut down and secure the truck on completion

On successful completion you receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for RIIMPO337E Conduct articulated haul truck operations.

Performance Evidence

You must demonstrate articulated haul truck operations that safely and effectively follow workplace procedures on at least two occasions, including:

  • Conducting pre-start and start-up checks, and driving and manoeuvring the truck, adjusting technique to suit work conditions
  • Operating the truck within its equipment operating capacity
  • Positioning the truck for loading under at least one type of loading equipment, such as shovels, wheel loaders, excavators, bins or conveyor belts
  • Hauling materials to designated locations such as a tip head, crusher pocket or waste dump
  • Positioning the truck for dumping and unloading materials with limited spillage
  • Conducting shutdown and refuelling, and identifying and making minor adjustments for equipment issues
  • Locating and applying relevant documentation, policies and procedures, and wearing required PPE
  • Applying safe work practices, identifying and reporting hazards, and entering and exiting the vehicle using the three-point touch technique
  • Using communication techniques and equipment essential to the safe completion of the work

Knowledge Evidence

You must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Key policies, procedures, legislation and requirements for articulated haul truck operation, including site traffic codes, fault identification and operational maintenance
  • Key site information, including geological and survey data, plans and maps
  • Articulated haul truck types, including front and rear dumping, and their technical capabilities, limitations and equipment safety requirements
