Running the daily operations of a racing stable takes judgement, horsemanship and the ability to work independently under a trainer’s direction. RGR30218 Certificate III in Racing (Stablehand) builds the skills to care for racehorses, manage stable operations and oversee other stablehands in a harness or thoroughbred racing stable. It is a recognised qualification for stablehand roles across the racing industry.
This qualification reflects the role of individuals working as a stablehand in charge of daily operations in a harness or thoroughbred racing stable, caring for racehorses.
The stablehand works to the delegated instructions of a trainer who has overall responsibility for operations. They work in a stable environment directing and coordinating one or more stablehands or managing operations independently, depending on the size of the stable, and are permitted under the rules of racing to act for the trainer. They are required to work autonomously, use judgement, interpret information, apply solutions to various problems and take responsibility for operations and outputs.
This qualification is required for industry licensing and registration in some states and territories; check with the relevant Principal Racing Authority for current requirements. Competencies attained apply to the harness and thoroughbred codes of the industry, and the qualification records which code it was achieved under.
There are no entry requirements for this qualification.
Assessment is competency-based and combines theory with practical demonstration.

The qualification is made up of 18 units of competency: 12 core units plus 6 elective units, with at least 1 elective from Group A and at least 3 from Group B.
On successful completion you receive a nationally recognised Certificate III in Racing (Stablehand).
