CPCCLRG4001

Licence to Perform Rigging Advanced Level

Advanced rigging work sits at the top of the trade, covering gin poles, flying foxes, guyed derricks and suspended and hung scaffolds. CPCCLRG4001 Licence to Perform Rigging Advanced Level builds the skills to plan, set up and safely operate this equipment on complex lifts. It is your training step towards the RA High Risk Work Licence.

Training Details

This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to safely perform advanced rigging work. This is high-risk work: riggers use mechanical load shifting equipment and associated gear to move, place or secure loads, including plant, equipment or members of a building or structure, and ensure the stability of those members while setting up and dismantling cranes and hoists.

This unit applies to rigging work involving gin poles and shear legs, flying foxes and cable ways, guyed derricks and structures, and suspended scaffolds and fabricated hung scaffolds.

Completion of the general construction induction training program is required by anyone carrying out construction work; achievement of CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry meets this requirement.

This unit has a prerequisite: successful completion of CPCCLRG3002 Licence to Perform Rigging Intermediate Level, or holding a valid intermediate rigging licence.

Assessment is competency-based and combines theory with practical demonstration, using the national assessment instrument mandated for the licence.

The unit covers advanced rigging activities including:

  • Erecting, operating and dismantling gin poles or shear legs, including operating a winch to move a load
  • Erecting, operating and dismantling a flying fox or cable way
  • Erecting, operating and dismantling a guyed derrick
  • Erecting, operating and dismantling a suspended scaffold
  • Installing and removing a fabricated hung scaffold

Learning Outcomes

  • Plan advanced rigging tasks, including hazard identification, risk controls and load calculations
  • Select and inspect rigging equipment, PPE and communication equipment
  • Set up the task, including risk controls and assessing ground and structure suitability
  • Undertake advanced rigging activities across gin poles, flying foxes, guyed derricks and suspended and hung scaffolds
  • Complete the task, including equipment storage and handover certificates

On successful completion you receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for CPCCLRG4001 Licence to Perform Rigging Advanced Level. Competence in this unit does not by itself grant the licence; you then apply to WorkSafe WA for the RA High Risk Work Licence separately.

Performance Evidence

To demonstrate competency in this unit, a candidate must meet the elements and performance criteria by erecting, using and dismantling:

  • A gin pole or shear leg of at least 8 m with a working load limit of at least 400 kg, winch-powered with at least one diversion sheave
  • A flying fox or cable way of at least 4 m height and 10 m span, able to support at least 200 kg
  • Guyed derricks and structures of a minimum height of 8 m
  • A suspended scaffold of at least 4 m height and 200 kg capacity, attached by a dual needle system using counterweights and a powered winch
  • A fabricated hung scaffold of at least 4 m height and 3.4 m length, consisting of one continuous heavy-duty platform

The candidate must also check relevant workplace information, perform all activities in compliance with workplace-specific, safe work and manufacturer requirements including handover certificates, identify hazards and apply risk controls, and use all associated rigging gear.

Knowledge Evidence

To be competent in this unit, a candidate must demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Safe work requirements for rigging under Australian Standards and WHS legislation, regulations and codes of practice
  • Workplace information including safe work method statements, permits, equipment records and manufacturer specifications
  • Hazard identification and mitigation, including the hierarchy of control and PPE, and hazards commonly encountered in advanced rigging such as instability, overhead and underground hazards, adverse weather and falls from height
  • Inspection, handling and storage of rigging structures and associated gear, including flexible steel wire rope, chains, slings, shackles, rigging screws, lever blocks and sheaves
  • Safety and communication equipment, including harnesses, energy absorbers, inertia reels and two-way radios
  • Ground and foundation suitability for advanced rigging, and mathematical processes for calculating loads
