Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations

Skilled plant operators keep civil construction sites moving safely and efficiently, from excavators and graders to rollers and haul trucks. RII30820 Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations builds the skills to operate a broad range of civil construction plant, read plans and specifications, and apply risk management on site. It is a recognised qualification for skilled plant operator roles.

This qualification reflects the role of individuals working as skilled operators with civil construction plant, who apply a broad range of skills in varied work contexts, using some discretion and judgement and relevant theoretical knowledge. These individuals may provide theoretical advice and support a team.

Assessment is competency-based and combines theory with practical demonstration.

What You’ll Study

The qualification is made up of 20 units of competency: 15 core units plus 5 elective units, with at least 1 from Group A and at least 2 from Group B (or at least 2 from Group A plus a further 3 from Groups A to C).

  • Core skills: planning and organising work, carrying out measurements and calculations, identifying and protecting underground services, reading plans and job specifications, manual excavation, supporting plant operations, spreading and compacting materials, basic levelling, workplace communication, risk management, handling and disposing of materials, using hand and power tools, operating small plant and equipment, WHS policies and procedures, and draining and dewatering sites.
  • Group A electives (plant operations): options include skid steer loader, backhoe/loader, excavator, wheeled and tracked front end loader, dozer, grader, scraper, pipe layer, articulated and rigid haul truck operations.
  • Group B electives (specialised plant): options include paver, stabiliser, telescopic materials handler, integrated tool carrier, tractor, self-propelled compactor, roller, water vehicle, continuous bucket trencher, belly dump truck and tip truck operations.
  • Group C electives (site skills): options include erosion and sediment control, dogging, scaffolding basic level, elevating work platform, confined spaces, working at heights, traffic control, concrete work and site quality standards.

On successful completion you receive a nationally recognised Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations.
