Training Details

This skill set provides the skills and knowledge required to be a racehorse trainer in the harness or thoroughbred racing codes.

It covers the care, treatment and welfare of horses, determining nutritional and exercise requirements, planning and implementing horse education programs, trialling and racing horses, and complying with racing industry ethics, integrity and protest and inquiry processes.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements apply to this skill set and vary in each state and territory. Check with the relevant Principal Racing Authority for current requirements.

Units completed within this skill set provide credit towards RGR40118 Certificate IV in Racing (Racehorse Trainer).

What You’ll Study

The skill set is made up of 9 units of competency covering safety and compliance, horse care and welfare, and training and racing:

• Health, safety and industry compliance: contributing to health and safety of self and others, complying with racing industry ethics and integrity, and participating in racing protests and inquiries.
• Horse care and welfare: providing care and treatment of horses, managing horse health and welfare, and determining nutritional requirements for racing horses.
• Training and racing: participating in implementing racehorse exercise programs, planning and implementing education of horses for racing, and trialling and racing horses.

On successful completion you receive a Statement of Attainment for the RGRSS00042 Harness or Thoroughbred Training Operations Skill Set, recognised nationally within the racing industry.
